Here’s What Takes Place at Your Six Month Exam & Cleaning Appointment

May 29, 2017

Ever wonder why you have to visit us twice a year for a checkup? A lot happens in the six month time frame between your appointments. Even after diligently brushing and flossing at home, plaque and tarter build up on your teeth that can also cause harm to your gums. Read about what we do to ensure that you keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Before the actual cleaning begins, our hygienist will perform a dental exam of your entire mouth. A small mirror is used to see around your teeth and gums for inflammation, noticeable cavities, chips and cracks, and the condition of any existing fillings you have in your teeth.

During your cleaning, our hygienist will use special dental instruments to remove:

Plaque, a sticky substance on teeth where bacteria grows that can damage tooth enamel and lead to cavities. Tooth decay can be prevented with regular removal.

Tarter, hardened dental plaque that forms both above and below the gum line, often leading to receding gums and gum disease. Regular removal helps to keep your gums healthy.

Once the cleaning is complete, our hygienist will polish your teeth with a gritty toothpaste that continues to clean and remove any tartar left behind on the surface of your teeth. This process leaves your teeth shiny and smooth.

The last step to your cleaning is for our hygienist to floss your teeth. This flossing treatment gets deep in between your teeth and removes any leftover plaque and polishing paste that may be left behind.

Now it’s time for the dentist to come in to take a look at your nice, clean mouth. While cleaning your teeth, our hygienist made notes to your chart for anything that needs further attention. The dentist will examine your teeth and gums, conduct an oral cancer screen, check your jaw for any problems and make recommendations for necessary treatment. Now, schedule your next cleaning six months out and you’re done! See you soon!
