For Same Day Crowns, Upper East Side Residents come to NY Family Dental Arts

May 29, 2017

If New York is the city that never sleeps, then it should come as no surprise that New Yorkers are busy people. Perhaps that’s why you’ve been putting off that dental crown the dentist told you to get months ago. Who in New York has the time for two dental appointments two weeks apart just to get a crown? Well now, thanks to CEREC 3, the dentists at New York Family Dental Arts can provide same day crowns for Upper East Side residents.

WHAT IS CEREC 3?

CEREC—which stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEramic REConstruction—uses CAD/CAM technology (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) to create dental restorations in just one appointment. Developed by Sirona® Dental Systems, CEREC 3 is the third model of CEREC that was originally created in 1980. Like its predecessors, the CEREC 3 system replaces the old and time-consuming method of manufacturing and placing dental crowns.

WHAT MAKES UP THE CEREC 3 SYSTEM?

Every CEREC system consists of three main elements: a digital infrared camera, a computer with specialized software and a milling unit. Together, these take the place of molded impressions, temporary crowns and the need for at least two appointments to complete the process of receiving a crown.

SAME DAY CROWNS PROCESS

Once you and your dentist on the Upper East Side determine that you are a qualified candidate for a CEREC crown, you are only a few hours away from having a newly restored tooth. As with traditional crowns, the first step necessitates preparing the tooth by reducing the sides and biting surface so the crown fits seamlessly in your mouth. Then, we’ll use the CEREC camera to capture digital images of your tooth.

These images are uploaded to the CEREC computer that uses CAD/CAM technology to create a 3D virtual model of the tooth. From this, the computer designs your crown; the design includes the correct size, shape and color.

Once the design is complete, the milling unit takes over fabricating your crown from a lock of high-quality ceramic. Milling usually takes no more than 20 minutes. Dr. Vaiman or Dr. Kessler will check the polish the crown for a perfect finish, check the fit and then cement the crown in to place over your tooth.
